![]() They were not capable of scrutinizing the bolero’s Castilian poetry, including its lovely “florilegio.” On the other hand, the young people–those new generations designed to inherit, cultivate and enrich the bolero–were less and less capable of comprehending its beautiful and complex harmonies. The filin text revealed plenty of sentiment, but lacked topicality. ![]() Throughout its constant development as the most durable and widespread Latin American popular genre, the bolero could not advance much beyond the complexities of feeling (or filin)–loaded with harmonies and rest intervals associated with jazz or bossa nova–or with its corresponding lyrics, characterized by their gorgeous impressionism and symbolic refinement. ![]() Just as it happened in the 1960s, when it was neglected as a result of the international ballad’s popularity, the survival of the bolero is publicly threatened again, at the dawn of the 21st century, by another menacing rival–the new vallenato style.
